Mud Spill Prevention

Archer has developed a unique mud spill prevention system to address the issue of environmental spill incidents. The Archer ROMAR Packer Management Systems can be applied on floating semi-submersible rigs, platforms and drill ships to eliminate spills of well fluid to the ocean.

  • Monitors pressure on the slip-joint packer, which is subject to the effect of wear from the ocean swell and tide. If slip-joint packer failure is detected, the system energizes the back-up packer near instantaneously and prevents the spill of fluid to the ocean
  • Uses intelligent ‘deadband’ tracking to set automatically alarm trip points. As the packer wears and pressure is increased to maintain a seal, the alarm trip point is automatically reset to ensure near instantaneous reaction time
  • Monitors both the primary packer, and the back-up packers to ensure complete system reliability
  • System is capable of monitoring 3x slip-joint packers. Thus, in the event of packer failure during well operations, there is a further monitored back-up available, thus avoiding rig down-time while a slip-joint packer is replaced during operations on a live well
  • System can remotely transmit data live to the operator or real-time operations center. In the event of an incident, data is immediately available to the operator. Some routine maintenance and troubleshooting can be carried out remotely, without sending a technician to the rig
  • New technology capability, to actively monitor packer wear and predict failure point. This new capability enables proactive, and more accurate preventative maintenance of packer elements. Thus, further reducing the risk of environmental incidents for operators and rig owners
